This Homemade Cinnamon Swirl Banana Bread is a tender, moist quick bread bursting with banana flavor and a delightful ribbon of cinnamon sugar throughout. Perfect for breakfast or a sweet snack!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened

  • 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 1/2 cups mashed ripe bananas (about 3-4 large)

  • 1/4 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1/2 tsp lemon juice)

  • For the Cinnamon Swirl:

  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar

  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Directions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan, or line with parchment paper.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and 3/4 cup granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  • Stir in the mashed bananas and buttermilk until just combined. Don’t overmix.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are fine.
  • In a small bowl, combine the 1/4 cup granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon for the swirl.
  • Pour half of the banana bread batter into the prepared loaf pan. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the batter.
  • Carefully spoon the remaining banana bread batter over the cinnamon sugar layer. Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon sugar mixture on top.
  • Using a butter knife, gently swirl the cinnamon sugar into the top layer of batter a few times, being careful not to reach the bottom of the pan.
  • Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. If the top browns too quickly, tent loosely with foil.
  • Remove from oven and let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

    • Banana Magic: Always use super ripe, almost black bananas for the best flavor and moisture. Mash them well with a fork for a chunky texture or an immersion blender for a smoother batter.
    • Swirl Secrets: Don’t overmix the cinnamon swirl into the batter. A gentle pass with a knife or skewer, just a few times, is all you need to create those distinct, beautiful layers without completely integrating it.
    • Patience is Key: While tempting, let the banana bread cool completely before slicing. This prevents crumbling, helps the cinnamon swirl set, and allows the flavors to meld beautifully for the best taste and texture.
